Alexander Karanikas is Professor Emeritus of English, University of Illinois in CHicago, where he taught courses in American literature until 1982. His poetry has appeared in many journals, several anthologies, and two volumes, In Praise of Heroes (war poems) and When Youth Gets Poetic: Port Chicago Poets and Hold Fast to Dreams (edited by Anna Bontemps) both included selections of his work. His play, Death of the Cat, won first prize in an international contest sponsored by Triton College. During World War II he served as film consultant to the Army Air Forces in Alaska (two documentaries on Arctic flight operations) and, more recently, for two dramas that played and reran in the American Playhouse series on PBS, “King of America” and “My Palikari”. Since 1985 he has become one of Chicago’s busiest senior models and actors, having appeared in films, commercials, billboards, and many newspaper and magazine ads.
